MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Northwoods Fire and Rescue Inc. shall be the preservation and protection of life and property from and during such fires or other emergencies as may occur in the fire district and vicinity. The secondary objective of this organization shall be the protection of life in the event of sudden medical emergencies.

We, the members of Northwoods Fire Rescue, are proud of our accomplishments over the years. We accept the failures as learning experiences and strive to improve on them. We take pride in our service. We will continue to strive to provide the best protection possible for the West Howellsville Township.

Ethos-  The distinctive character, spirit, and attitudes of a people, culture, era

During an emergency, we are all business; afterward and in between we are a closely knit family of friends and neighbors. We are always willing to welcome another good neighbor into our ranks.

The Northwoods Fire & Rescue Department provides fire protection and EMS response for an area of approximately 40 square miles and a population around 3600. Established by several local homesteaders in 1969, the Northwoods Fire District extends from Meadow Rd at the City Limits to the Bladen County Line on Tolarsville Rd (In essence the West Howellsville Township, and is bordered by the City of Lumberton to the South and East Howellsville Township to the east, Saddletree Township to the west.

Northwoods Fire & Rescue Department meets a mix of suburban and rural fire protection needs. Residential properties make up the majority of structures within this service area, but a local farming community, Hog/Chicken houses and light commercial occupancies are included in the response area. We are a NCDOI rated 6/9 Fire district. We provide fire protection, Light rescue capabilities in the form of vehicle extrication, Emergency Medical Services at the First Responder level, and Hazardous Materials response at the Operations level.

We respond to about 200 emergency calls a year. Most of them are fire in nature. Structure fires are infrequent due to the relative newness of the structures within the community and an active fire prevention program.

Northwoods Fire Rescue Department is comprised of members from all walks of life and is purely volunteer.  There are several classifications of members within the department including Firefighters, Junior Firefighters, and Emergency Support Unit. Although numbers fluctuate, currently there are about 50 people serving in some capacity. Responders are divided into 2 Stations, each with a Deputy Chief (District Chief) Captain and 2 Lieutenants. Each crew is assigned to respond to their station. No personnel are to respond to the scene POV, unless the Call is DIRECTLY between the persons location and Station. The department meets the 2nd Monday Night of each Month for In House training or business meetings.

Fire Control Live Fire Training

Saturday, February 18, 2012  On February 18, 2012, The 12 and 16 House participated in a live fire training exercise at Robeson Community College Training Center. This live fire training was part of the NCDOI/OSFM FFII "Fire Control" Class. These 2 departments trained on advancing hose lines and maintaining team integrity while experiencing "live fire" conditions. Scenarios included a first floor fire and basement fire. All personnel involved agreed the training was very beneficial.

Northwoods Fire Rescue would like to thank the members from Lumber Bridge VFD for being agressive in your pursuit to remain a top notch Fire Department. We have enjoyed working together these last few weeks, and look forward to working with you in the future. Unless we all put aside our personal differences and strive towards teamwork, We (the Fire Service of Robeson County) will never provide true Professional service to the citizens and visitors of Robeson County.

Live Fire Training

Wednesday, February 8, 2012  On February 8 2012, Northwoods FD, East Howellsville FD, Prospect FD, Lumber Bridge FD, and Raft Swamp FD participated in a live fire training exercise at Robeson Community College Training Center. This live fire training was used to evaluate the benchmarks required on a structure fire. These 5 departments trained on advancing hose lines and maintaining team integrity while experiencing "live fire" conditions. These departments, with the exception of Northwoods and East Howellsville, never respond together as departments on an incident. The results of this training was very beneficial in determining where improvements can be made.

On February 9, 2012, Northwoods FD, East Howellsville FD, and Prospect FD came together for another night of Live Fire training. This night, the instructors went over some of the issues from the night before, went over the required benchmarks on the scene of a working fire, and some operational do's and don'ts. The departments all worked really well together.

Northwoods Fire Rescue would like to thank the members from East Howellsville FD, Prospect FD, Lumber Bridge FD, and Raft Swamp FD for being agressive in your pursuit to remain a top notch Fire Department. We have enjoyed working together these nights, and look forward to working with you in the future. Unless we all put aside our personal differences and strive towards teamwork, We (the Fire Service of Robeson County) will never provide true Professional service to the citizens and visitors of Robeson County.

Sam never met a stranger, and will be missed greatly. R.I.P. Brother...

Well done good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling these affairs. I will make you ruler over many.      Matthew 25:23

Northwoods Fire & Rescue responded to 190 calls in 2011. A renewed committment to training was also obvious, with all members combining to log 5,642 training hours. We have an even more aggressive training calendar in 2012, and hope to top last year's number. This shows our department's willingness to make ourselves better and to be able to SERVE those in need to the best of our ability. 2011's membership drive was very successful, with our department nearly doubling its membership. We now have an even greater family of firefighters, some of which are stationed at our Forest Acres Station and some of which are stationed at our Tolarsville station. If you live in the Northwoods fire district, we are here if you need us! May 2012 be good to you and your family.
